It's OK to...

After years of being the 'helper' rather than the 'helpee', I sat down and thought about why that was. The uncomfortable conclusion I came to was quite a shock. That when those of us people associate with doing the helping end up needing help, it doesn't always come. We tell people that it's OK to ask for help, but are we prepared to give it when asked? Do we assume / expect certain people to be better equipped to deal with things on their own, and just gloss over their requests? If we say it's OK to ask for help, we have to be prepared for those requests to come from unexpected places. As much as it's difficult to ask for help, it can be equally difficult to accept it when offered out of nowhere.  We've been told for too long that strength is important, that we need to just get on with it, that people in X have it much worse.
