Why do we need to think about looking after 'me'?
For those reading this who know me in person much of this probably won't come as much of a surprise.
Over the past year I have become, with the unfailing support of my OH, determined and pretty passionate about the need for me (specifically) and people in general to make time for themselves. To make time to look after our own health and well-being, not just that of those around us.
I realised, far too late really, that I hadn't had any of it. In all the time that I'd been a Mam, in the early days of learning how to parent, in the following years, I didn't really get any of it. Or at least, not constructively. For every minute I took for myself, I felt like I was failing as a parent.
'Self-care', as the process of taking time to put yourself first has become known, means different things to different people. It doesn't have to cost much, if anything. What is important is that we do it.
There are different ways we can look after ourselves, and each of us needs to figure out what works for us.
I'm getting there, I've by no means got it all figured out just yet, but I'm much better than I was a year ago. One of my friends brought the blessingmanifesting.com website to my attention once I'd actively started trying to figure out how to balance the confilicting demands of the different parts of my life, and making proper time for me. And for ME, these are the things I've learnt (so far) that I need to prioritise to keep me being, well .. ME ...
PHYSICAL
Sleep
Physical Exercise (in my case - running)
EMOTIONAL
Stress Management (Thanks Hun)
Kindness
SOCIAL
Time Together - friends, family, my OH ... but also, when to say 'no'. I'm still working on that bit!
Communication
SPIRITUAL
Journalling - this blog, basically.
PERSONAL
Hobbies - and the space to do them easily.
SPACE
Organised space. And minimal clutter - I am slowly becoming the Queen of decluttering!
FINANCIAL
Budgeting
Saving - these both sound easy, but only when you actually understand how your finances work!
WORK
Positive workspace - sometimes, this is as 'simple' as asking if you can change your office space around ...
Work boundaries - I'm still working on this. It's hard when you work in a sector you care passionately about. Because sometimes, you're never quite sure where your work ends, and your personal interest begins ...
But generally, my point is, make time for ME. Because if you don't, it's pretty certain that no-one else will.
